Toms River - Born in 1920 in PA and died Friday, February 15, 2018 in NJ.

Attended Scranton public schools; high school graduate; AA degree 1941 from Wharton Evening Extension School in Scranton, PA. BS degree in Economics 1947, University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. Masters degree in School Business Administration 1970, Rutgers University; credentialed as a School Business Administrator and Enrolled Agent to practice before the IRS.

Enlisted in U.S. Coast Guard, Groton, CT in 1942 moving from Apprentice Seaman to Storekeeper 3rd Class. Accepted into Coast Guard V-12 College Training Program at Yale University. Attended Midshipman School at Notre Dame University, attended Supply courses at Harvard University; commissioned 1945 as an Ensign in the US Navy Supply Corps; performed decommissioning duties for two vessels and an Admiral's staff. Released from Active Duty Status 1946, remained in the Naval Reserve.

Assistant Manager of Clark Paint and Varnish Company, Springfield, MA; Opened franchise of Clark in Westfield, MA with brother.

Recalled to US Navy 1951 for Korean War; served 2 years as executive officer at Military Sea Transportation, Brooklyn, NY. Released 1953 from Active Duty Status, remained in the Naval Reserve until 1980 retiring as Lieutenant Commander.

Met and married 1952 Sarah (Sandy) Weinberg in Brooklyn, NY. Returned to franchise in Springfield MA to raise a family. Served as solicitor for the Red Cross, Jewish Federation, and B'nai Brith; officer in American Veterans Committee and President of B'nai Brith.

Relocated to NJ 1964 to takeover Clark franchise for 5 years in Oakhurst, NJ.

Accountant in the Federal Fund Section of the NJ Department of Education until 1985 retiring as Supervising Accountant. Partnered with Larry Fried to establish B & F Tax Service, worked as a tax professional until 2005.

Member: Jewish War Veterans, Military Officers Association, National Association of Tax Professionals, Fleet Reserve Association, Penn and Rutgers Alumni.

Long-time member of Monmouth Reform Temple; Served as Brotherhood President and Temple President; member of the Social Action Committee. Volunteer at Brick Hospital Eldermed and Lunch Break. Service leader for Jewish worship at several nursing homes.

Bernard was predeceased by his parents Esther and Mortimer (Dick) Brandwene, his brother George Brandwene, his wife (2000) Sandy, his son Neil (2007) and his son-in-law David Giovacchini (2016). He is survived by his daughter Martha Brandwene (Rita), Lois Giovacchini and his daughter-in-law Ruth DiMauro (Tony) as well as three grandchildren: Kelly A. Brandwene, Lido E. Giovacchini, and Isabel M. Giovacchini.

Service and interment on Sunday, February 18, 2018. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Monmouth Reform Temple Building Fund.
