Bernard Joseph Moore

Spring Lake Heights - Bernard Joseph Moore, age 81, passed away on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at his home in Spring Lake Heights surrounded by his family. Bernie was born and raised in Newark. He was 1962 graduate of Mississippi State University. Upon graduation he proudly served as Lieutenant in the United States Air Force from 1963-1968, being awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal in 1965. He married his wife, Angela in 1965. Over the course of his military career, they lived in New York State, France and England before calling Spring Lake Heights home in 1968.

For 45 years, Bernie worked for the Department of Environmental Protection for the State of New Jersey. During that time, he served as Director of Coastal Engineering and the Bureau of Dam Safety and Flood Control as well as the Administrator for the Division of Engineering and Construction. He also served as Director, American Shore and Beach Preservation Association and was a member of the Jersey Shore Partnership, American Coastal Coalition and the Western Dredging Association. Upon his retirement in 2002, he became a liaison for Stevens Institute of Technology.

Bernie found relaxation in gardening and "fixing" things around the house. Most importantly, he loved his family above all else, cherishing every moment spent with them. His greatest pride and joy were his 8 grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his parents Daniel and Alice Burns Moore; his son, Richard Allen Moore; his brother, Daniel J. Moore; his in-laws Anthony and Aida Romano; his brother in law John Romano; and his brother in law Robert Sherer.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 53 years Angela Moore; his children, Patricia Bauter and her husband Bob, Michael Moore and his wife Carol, Roberta Rice and her husband Jack; his sisters Alice M. Moore and Regina Moore Sherer; his eight grandchildren, Nicholas, Matthew, Megan, Christopher, Jessica, Kyle, Sienna and Kendall; his 4 nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 from 4-8 p.m. at O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall.
