Dr. Bernard Susskind

AGE: 87 • Toms River

Dr. Bernard Susskind of Toms River passed away at his home on January 22, 2017 after a valiant struggle with a long standing illness. He was 87 years old. Born in Newark, he was the son of Attorney Joseph Susskind and Edith Susskind. Dr. Susskind attended New York University, medical school at the University of Amsterdam, did his internship at Newark Beth Israel Hospital and his residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Cincinnati. He had the rank of Captain in the United States Army and served two years in a MASH Unit during the conflict in Korea.

In 1962 Dr. Susskind began his practice of Ophthalmology and was the first eye surgeon in Toms River. He served on the Board of Trustees and was Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Community Medical Center. He was a member of the Ocean County Medical Society and was involved in numerous charities.

Dr. Susskind was an avid New York Yankees fan and enjoyed Baseball Fantasy Camps. He participated in many sports; golf, tennis, and ran marathons including New York and Boston. One of his many hobbies was photography where he won numerous awards and recognition for his unusual contemporary style. He enjoyed learning and speaking different languages.

Throughout his life he was faced with many obstacles but always addressed them with the keen wit and the dry sense of humor he was known for.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 36 years, Judith, his son Marc, daughter Jody, grandchildren Jonah and Maizy, a sister Marlene Diamond and nephews Dr. Joseph Diamond and Dr. Leonard Diamond. He is also remembered by his true and devoted friends, Dr. Joseph Cuozzo, Dr. Kenneth Ehrlich, Dr. Mark Meskin, and Mr. Ralph Corcina.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all donations be made to a facility that was dear to his heart, The Ocean County Veterinarian Hospital, 828 River Avenue, Lakewood, New Jersey, Attention Dr. Warren Briggs.
