Billy Reed

Holgate - Billy Andrew Reed, 93, of Holgate passed away at home on January 26, 2018. Billy was born and raised in Kenvil, NJ and formerly of the Berkshire Valley section of Jefferson Township. He summered in Long Beach Island with his family since the 1960's. In 1988, Billy and his wife Lorraine purchased that summer home and permanently retired to Holgate. He worked as a painter foreman for both Hercules and Morris County Park Systems. Billy was a member and past Trustee of the First Presbyterian Church of Berkshire Valley where he pitched for the Berkshire Valley Softball Team for many years. Billy was also a member of the Musconetcong Lodge #42 F&AM of Budd Lake, NJ and Shriners International. Billy enjoyed traveling to Florida, hunting and fishing.

What he was most proud of was his service during World War II in the U.S. Army, he served in the Solomon Islands and the Philippines, after 18 months of active duty he was shot in the head and spent a year in the Hospital recovering. He was the recipient of 3 purple hearts, the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge.

Mr. Reed was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Lorraine Reed in 2009 and his grandson, Reed Goldsmith in 2006. He was the youngest and last surviving member of his siblings, Elmira, Harry, Rodman, Jack and Clifford.

Surviving Mr. Reed is his daughter, Debra Goldsmith and her husband Tom and son, Terry Reed, grandchildren Mallory Goldsmith, Wesley Goldsmith and his wife Melissa, Ali King and her husband Rob and Misty Reed along with two great-grandchildren, Eva and Reed Goldsmith.

A Viewing will be offered on Wednesday, January 31st, 2018 from 3-6 pm at the Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Home, 1119 Long Beach Blvd (corner of 12th St.), Ship Bottom, NJ 08008. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 1st at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church of Berkshire Valley, 635 Berkshire Valley Road, Wharton, NJ 07885. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Billy's memory may be made to the .
