AGE: 91 • Toms River

Carl J. Riester passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at the age of 91. Born in Newark, Carl resided in the Larchmont section of Union for 30 years before moving to Greenbriar Woodlands, Toms River over 25 years ago.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Dolores Moran Riester in 2008; his parents, Karl and Bertha Riester; and his sisters, Hilda Heinrich, Mildred Provost, and Elsie Wehmeyer. Surviving are his daughters: Mary Beth Riester of Simsbury, CT; Carol Ann Giardelli and her husband George of Red Bank, NJ; Pam White and her husband Edward of Waxhaw, NC; and his three grandchildren: Lauren, Conor, and Dylan White.

Carl proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a radioman on PT-538 while stationed in the Philippines during World War II. He graduated from St. Benedict's Prep in Newark and Seton Hall College. He later received his Master's Degree in Education from Seton Hall University. Carl was a teacher at Montogmery Street Pre-Vocational School in Newark. He later served as a dedicated Industrial Arts teacher at West Essex Regional Middle School.

A true gentleman, Carl was an active member of the VFW Post 8885 in Toms River. He also served as Past President of the Greenbriar Woodlands Golf Association.

All arrangements were held privately under the direction of D'Elia Funeral Home, Lakewood. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Carl's name to the VFW.
