Caterina Viscomi Obituary
Caterina Viscomi

AGE: 85 • Highlands

Caterina Viscomi (nee Casadonte), 85 years old, died on February 24, 2017. Caterina is survived by the love of her life, Peter, with whom she recently celebrated 60 years of matrimony. They had been friends forever; growing up in the same small town of Montepaone, Italy. Caterina was one of 12 children and was the designated family cook from a very young age, lovingly feeding not only her family, but also the countless neighbors and friends who worked on her family's olive groves and fruit orchards.

Peter, at age 19, left for Argentina; they were wed, first by proxy, then upon her arrival there. After twelve years, and four children, they immigrated to the United States.

Caterina loved family parties, insisting on cooking everything to perfection. She hosted large gatherings of family and friends. They couldn't wait to be invited to the Viscomi house. The day before her tragic illness, after planning the upcoming vegetable garden with Peter, she stocked her freezer with homemade treats that would be packaged for delivery to family in the United States, Italy and Brazil.

Caterina instilled in her children the importance of loyalty to family and friends and a strong work ethic. Deprived of a formal education due to family needs and antiquated societal mores she made sure her children, especially her daughters, received every educational opportunity and she encouraged all her children to continue their studies to post-graduate degrees. And they all did. In her own way, this 4' 10" dynamo inspired female empowerment.

In addition to raising her own children, Caterina, helped raise an innumerable quantity of beloved nieces and nephews.

Nita, as she was affectionately called, cherished her grandchildren, Derek, Gabrielle and Sabrina; she lovingly attended their school functions and sporting events, rain or shine. She was looking forward to Gabrielle's wedding to Louis Diamond, whom she already considered her new grandson. There is no doubt she will be at their wedding in spirit.

In addition to her husband and grandchildren, she is survived by her children, Victor and daughter-in-law Carol, and her daughters Ana and Josephine. She is survived by two siblings, Pina Mirarchi and Dante Casadonte, as well as many family members here in the United States, Italy and Brazil. She was predeceased by her daughter, Caterina.

Caterina, deeply religious, believed in the power of giving. In lieu of flowers and befitting her belief of helping children, please consider a donation to the , 501 St. Jude Pl., Menphis TN, 38105, or www.stjude.org.

A Funeral Mass will be offered on Tuesday at 10 AM from Our Lady of Perpetual Help RC Church, 141 Navesink Ave. (Rte #36 East) Highlands. Relatives & friends are invited to call at Posten's Funeral Home, 59 E. Lincoln Ave. Atlantic Highlands, NJ on Monday, 2-4 & 6-8 PM. Interment services are private.
