AGE: 95 • Lakewood

Charles G. Maffey, 95, of Lakewood passed away on Wednesday May 10 in the care of his loving family. He was a very proud member of the Greatest Generation". Born in Rahway, he moved to Elizabeth where he attended school, was married and raised his family.

During WWII, Charlie proudly served in the US Navy participating in 11 major engagements in the Pacific and surviving Halsey's Typhoon on board the USS Monterey with former President Gerald Ford.

In 1947, he married the love of his life, Evelyn, and enjoyed 63 years of marriage. Charlie and Evelyn were blessed with 4 children, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren - all of whom adored them.Charlie was the owner of Maffey's Security Group in Elizabeth, never fully retiring because his favorite saying was 'Work is the joy of life". His favorite pastimes were bowling, golf, playing cards and most importantly enjoying family times.He was a communicant of St. Genevieve's Church in Elizabeth for many years and presently attended St. Joseph's Church in Toms River.

Charlie was predeceased by his loving wife, Evelyn, and his sister, Grace. He is survived by his sister, Agnes,his brother, Constant (Afra) and his brother-in-law, Frank Maffei; children Ellen Maffey-Koons (Frank), Charles Maffey (Margaret), Edward

Maffey (Joann) and Andrew Maffey (Patricia).He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren and their spouses and 11 great-grandchildren as well as many other loving relatives and friends. He will be missed dearly.

Visitation will be at Silverton Memorial Home 2482 Church Road in Toms River, NJ on Monday, May 15 from 4-8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church 685 Hooper Avenue in Toms River on Tuesday, May 16 at 11 am, please arrive at the funeral home 9:30am.
