AGE: 93 • Brick

Claire J. Deter, 93, of Brick, died Saturday, January 7, 2017 at her home. Born in Brooklyn in 1923, she later lived in Manasquan and Pt. Pleasant, before moving to Brick. She was a 1941 graduate of John Adams High School in New York City.

During World War II she was recognized for her dedicated service as a civilian worker by several officers of the Eastern Signal Corps. She worked at Camp Edison for the Army Red Cross; at Camp Evans typing Army Radar Instruction books for the G.P.O.; at Fort Monmouth where classified books had to be shipped to "the boys" overseas; and at Fort Hancock Army Artillery Base which defended New York Harbor.

In 1946 she married and had two children. She was a devoted wife, mother, seamstress and caregiver to her parents and siblings. Mrs. Deter was an office manager for Pt. Pleasant Iron Works in Pt. Pleasant Beach; a family owned and operated business for many years.

Her hobbies included travel planning, books, home decorating, group knitting & crocheting for good causes. She traveled the North American continent extensively with family and friends visiting all fifty states and all but one of the Canadian provinces. She visited many of the major National Parks and developed a love of the outdoors and the natural beauty of the world.



Mrs. Deter was pre-deceased by her beloved husband Thomas in 2003 and is survived by her son, Tad and his wife Donna of Howell; daughter, Darcy Norton and her husband Charles of Baltimore, MD; grandchildren, Kyle and Courtney Deter.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South Street, Manasquan, NJ. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 am at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Brielle.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Salvation Army.
