1928 - 2017 Obituary Condolences
Fr. Conall McHugh Omf Conv. Obituary
Fr. Conall McHugh, OFM Conv.

AGE: 88 • Lackawanna, NY

+Fr. Conall (Cletus) McHugh, OFM Conv. was born in Bordentown, NJ, on October 19, 1928 and passed on Wednesday, July 5, 2017. He was the son of +Cletus and +Mary (McSorley) McHugh. In addition to his Franciscan family, he is survived by his McSorley family cousins.

After attending Trenton Catholic, Trenton, NJ, Friar Conall entered the Franciscan Friars Conventual Novitiate in Cohoes, NY, in August of 1949. On August 27, 1950, he professed his Simple Vows and on August 27, 1953, he professed his Solemn Vows. He was ordained to the priesthood at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C. on February 4, 1956. He received an M. Ed. From the University of Pittsburgh.

+Fr. Conall was first assigned as a Parochial Assistant from 1956 through 1959, at St. Joseph Church, Utica, NY and then at Immaculate Conception Church, in Trenton, NJ. From 1959 through 1962 he ministered in the province delegation of Costa Rica. He returned for ministry at St Joseph Church, Hoboken from 1962 to 1966. Returning to Moravia, Costa Rica he stayed and ministered there for the next five years. He was made Guardian and Pastor of St. Joseph Church, Hoboken, NJ, in 1973. In 1975, he became the Guardian and Pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Church in the Diocese of Camden, NJ. From 1976 through 1985, he served at St. Bartholomew, Camden, NJ (1977-79); at Our Lady of the Angels in Albany, NY (1979-82); and at St. Peter Church, Riverside, NJ (1982-85).

With all this pastoral experience, it is little wonder that +Fr. Conall was elected as Minister Provincial of the then Immaculate Conception Province; a role he served well for six years, from 1985 to 1991. After serving as Minister Provincial, +Fr. Conall returned to Parochial life serving the Spanish Apostolate, first at St. Julia Parish, Siler City, NC, then at Our Lady of the Angels in Winston-Salem, NC, until 2009. He moved to St. Catharine of Siena Friary, Seaside Park, NJ, in 2009 where he offered sacramental ministry as he was able. Because of declining health, in late December 2015, he was moved to Mercy Nursing Facility at Our Lady of Victory in Lackawanna, NY.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, July 10, 2017, from 3-7:00 p.m. at St. Catharine of Siena Church, 50 E. Street, Seaside Park, NJ 08752 concluding with a 7:00 p.m. Franciscan Wake Service. On Tuesday, July 11, 2017, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. preceded by a 9:00 a.m. visitation. Interment will be at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Trenton, NJ. Memorial Donations may be made to the Franciscan Education Burse, 12300 Folly Quarter Rd., Ellicott City, MD 21042.

Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals 809 Central Ave. Seaside Park, NJ.
