Captain Davis Lanier Abernathy

AGE: 96 • Brielle

Captain Davis Lanier Abernathy, 96 of Brielle passed away on Friday April 14, 2017 at his daughter and son-in-law's home with family by his side. Davis was born and raised in Fuquay Springs, NC and graduated from Lafayette High School, Kipling, NC. He entered into the Merchant Marines at the age of 20 working for Standard Oil (which later became Esso and subsequently Exxon) and was a third mate serving during WWII. Davis sailed as first mate on Humble's Maiden Northwest Passage Voyage on Esso's SS Manhattan in 1969. After 39 years of service he retired from Exxon at the rank of Captain. Davis was a farm boy at heart and thoroughly enjoyed working in his yard. He was a diehard New York Met fan and enjoyed having breakfast at the Paramount and Rainbow Diners.

Davis was predeceased by his parents Clarence and Cornelia Abernathy; his three siblings and his wife of 63 years Helen Abernathy in 2009. He is survived by his two sons David (Judy) Abernathy of Lakewood and Dennis (Ellen) Abernathy of Brick; a daughter Lynn (Joseph) Roppoli of Brielle. Davis is also survived by 6 grandchildren Jill (Doug), Kristin (Edward), Michael (Jen), Kyle (Kelly), Jessica (Dan) and AJ (Caitlin), seven great grandchildren and a sister Mary Caviness and her family of Fuquay Varina, NC.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Wednesday April 19 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Orender Family Home for Funerals 2643 Old Bridge Road Manasquan. A funeral service will be held 10 am on Thursday April 20 at the funeral home. Entombment to follow at St. Catharine Mausoleum, Sea Girt.
