Commander Dennis V. Dougherty USN

New Orleans - Commander Dennis V. Dougherty USN (Retired) passed away December 20, 2017 in New Orleans at age 79. Mr. Dougherty was born in Hoboken, NJ and was a resident of West Long Branch, NJ. He resided in New Orleans for the past 37 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Dennis Dougherty and Alma Getchas Dougherty of Middletown, NJ, and his wife, Valerie McGee Dougherty. He is survived by sons Marc (Heather); and Craig; grandchildren Carlin, Marc, Dennis, Breck and Sam of Gretna, Louisiana; his brother Michael Dougherty (Elizabeth) of Manhattan; and his classmate and dear friend Virginia Quinn Hesse, of Red Bank. Mr. Dougherty was a graduate of Red Bank Catholic. There he was a member of the 1954 State Champion football team and was a first team All-State selection in 1955. He earned his B.S. in 1960 from the Citadel in South Carolina. A career naval officer, Mr. Dougherty participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis Blockade and served two combat tours in Vietnam. He commanded a flotilla of the famed "River Rats" on the Mekong River and was engaged in over 68 combat operations, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star. Known as the Duke, Denny, Papa Den, and Duna, he shall be deeply missed by all.
