Dick Gabriel, 54, of Island Heights, NJ died Friday Feb. 19, 2010 at home. Born in Toms River, he was a lifelong resident of Island Heights. Dick was a licensed electrician and owned Richard Gabriel Electrical Contractors in Island Heights for 22 years. Mr. Gabriel was a 1973 Central Regional High School graduate where he was a standout baseball player. After High School, Dick attended Ocean County College, played on the college's baseball team and was recruited by the Kansas City Royals. Dick was a member of the Berkeley Stripers Club, the Toms River Elks Lodge 1875, Henry's Playland Softball Team, the Island Heights Recreation, the Island Heights Friends of Recreation, Island Heights School Board, Toms River Country Club and was inducted into the Modified Fast pitch Hall of Fame. He was also an avid fisherman and golfer.
Surviving are his wife of 19 years, Christine (King); his son, Richard Gabriel of Island Heights; his daughter, Danielle Gabriel of Island Heights; his parents, Albert and Shirley Gabriel of Island Heights; a brother and sister in law, Brian and Laurette Gabriel of Island Heights; a sister, Wendi Gabriel of Island Heights; his uncles and aunts, Bob and Diane Gabriel of Toms River and Lester and Grace Ayres of FL; his brothers in law and sisters in law, Thomas and Robyn King of Toms River, Noreen and John Vafidas of Bayville, William and Sonia King of Brick, Catherine Olsen of Toms River, John and Kristin King of Toms River; a nephew Dustin Gabriel of Island Heights. He is also survived by several other nieces, nephews and dear friends.
The family will receive friends Monday 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 145 St. Catherine Blvd., Toms River. A funeral service will be offered Tuesday 10:00am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Dick to Oceans of Love, 1709 Rte 37 East, Toms River, NJ 08753 or the Richard Gabriel Scholarship Fund for Central Regional High School.
