AGE: 93 • Tinton Falls

Dorothy Anna Dabney Smith of Tinton Falls, N.J. departed this life on January 24, 2017 at Jersey Shore Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born on May 20, 1923 in New York, N.Y. to the late William Dabney and Louise Wells Dabney Williams. She moved to the Jersey Shore as a child and was a graduate of the Neptune Public School System.

She was employed by the New Jersey Bell System retiring after 31 years as a traffic manager.

Dorothy married the love of her life the late Honorable Thomas S Smith Sr. on August 2, 1942 in Asbury Park, N.J. During their 60 plus years of marriage her husband served as Police Chief, Councilman and Mayor of Asbury Park in addition to New Jersey Assemblyman from the 11 Legislative District.

Generous with her time and talents, Dorothy served her community in many civic and political organizations including the Monmouth County Mental Health Board, Monmouth County Visiting Nurse Association, Asbury Park Health Center, N.J. State Republican Women's Board and Monmouth County Federation of Republican Women. She was also a volunteer at the Jersey Shore Medical Center for several decades.

An avid Bridge player, Dorothy was a member of several bridge clubs. She also enjoyed knitting making numerous pieces for family and friends.

She was a parishioner of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church since her childhood. As a member, she served on the Vestry Board and St. Agnes Guild.

She was predeceased by her husband Thomas S. Smith Sr. in September of 2002. She is survived by her son Retired Superior Court Judge Thomas S. Smith Jr. and his wife Dianne; three granddaughters Kori Smith, Keir Smith Martin (Omar) , and Kaprece Smith; numerous relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 27th from 3:00pm to 5:00pm at Ely Funeral Home, 3316 N.J. State Highway 33, Neptune, N.J. 07753 and Saturday, January 28th from 11:00am to 11:45am at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, 156 Prospect Avenue, Asbury Park, N.J. 07712. A Funeral Mass will follow at 12:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the St. Agnes Guild of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church. Ely Funeral Home of Neptune has been entrusted with the arrangements.
