Lakewood - Dorothy Ruth Heiss was promoted to glory on November 30, 2017. She was born on March 5, 1940 in Perth Amboy, NJ. She attended Monmouth University and The Salvation Army School for Officer Training.

Ruth served God as a Lieutenant in the Salvation Army before marrying and starting her family. She became a foster parent, worked as a buyer at Steinbach's, and at Monmouth University, before working for the Salvation Army in a variety of capacities, including Service Unit Director for the NJ Division.

Ruth also served as a Girl Guard leader in several different Salvation Army corps. She played trombone in the band and sang in the Songsters of the Asbury Park corps for many years. During her retirement years, Ruth continued to volunteer for the Salvation Army, was a board member of the Kiwanis Club, and most recently a member of the Women's Club at Leisure Village in Lakewood. Ruth was a conscientious servant of God, young people, and those in need.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, John and Cecilia (Morse) Smith, and her brother, Carl Smith. She is survived by her children, Sharon Schmidtke (John), David Farmer (Kathleen), and William Heiss, her grandchildren, Daniel (Amber), Michael (Genese), Nathaniel, Tequila, Galen, and Julia, her great-grandchildren, Taylar, Joseph, and Asher, her cousins, and a multitude of friends.
