Asbury Park - Dr. Douglas Matthew Berry was born in Long Branch, New Jersey on October 3, 1948 to the late Douglas Berry and the late Katherine O'Brien Berry. He was preceded in death by his beloved ex-wife Martha Jane Lawton Berry, aunt Lt. Col. Elizabeth Berry, uncles Ed and Bob Berry, and cousin Robert Berry. Doug is survived by his children, Ian Michael Berry and Morgan Lawton Berry, daughter-in-law Laura Berry, grandchildren Martha Elizabeth Berry, Ava Jane Berry, and Scarlett Rebecca Berry, brother Michael Berry, sister-in-law Elaine Egidio, their children Christian and Jessica Huenke, and numerous cousins.

Doug graduated from Shore Regional High School in 1966, received a bachelor of fine arts degree from Bethany College in 1970, a master of arts in speech and theatre from Colorado State University in 1972, and a Ph.D. in theatre from the Ohio State University in 1976. His began his teaching career at Yankton College in South Dakota and moved to Minneapolis-St. Paul in 1977 to begin his tenure as an associate professor and Director of Theatre at the University of Minnesota. Doug returned to New Jersey in 1988, and became a fixture in Asbury Park where he brought the sounds of Tom Waits to the boardwalk and delighted audiences with his spoken word poetry.

Doug was a free spirit who will be dearly missed by many, and a celebration of his life is planned for 12:00PM - 3:00PM on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at The Saint, 601 Main St, Asbury Park, NJ.
