AGE: 88 • Brookville

Edward M. Covitz, 88, formerly of Brookville, NJ and Brooklyn, NY, died on Friday June 16th at Southern Ocean County Hospital, Manahawkin. Edward was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA and lived there until his early 20s. He also resided in Philadelphia, PA and Lakewood, NJ as well as the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn where he lived with his wife Kathleen for 36 years and raised his two children. Edward was the starting quarterback on the PA State Champion Hanover HS football team in 1945 and 46 and third baseman on the baseball team. After high school, Edward joined the Marine Corps for 2 years and returned home to play third base for the Lancaster Red Roses, then a minor league affiliate of the Brooklyn Dodgers. He then attended and graduated from the University of Miami, FL with a Bachelor's degree in Laboratory Sciences and from the CW Post campus of Long Island University with a Master's degree in Microbiology. He began a long career working as a Medical Technologist and managing hospital laboratories in the mid 1950s and officially retired in 2002 and moved to Brookville with his wife. Edward was very active in his community and in local government. He was a member of the Brookville Community Church, where he was married and both of his children were baptized, and also served for many years on the Waretown Environmental Commission and Zoning Board of Adjustment. Edward loved vegetable gardening and tending the many flower gardens in his yard. He also loved the NJ Pinelands and its natural beauty. Both he and his wife loved spring the most, when the wild laurel is in bloom.

Edward was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Kathleen M Coons Covitz, in 2008. Surviving are his children, Marc Covitz, Cream Ridge, NJ and Dana Covitz, Brookville, NJ; his grandchildren Bianca Covitz, Sarah Pretopapa and Lucas Covitz; his daughter-in-law Kathleen Bremer Covitz and his brother-in-law William Henry Coons Jr.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday, June 24th from 10-11 AM at Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Home, 335 S Main St, Barnegat, NJ 08005. Interment at Barnegat Memorial Cemetery, Barnegat, NJ. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Edward's memory may be made to the Brookville Community Church, Brookville Road, Barnegat, NJ 08005.
