Mantoloking - ED WRIGHT: TEACHER, SAILOR, BUILDER

Edwin H. "Ed" Wright; well known around Mantoloking for having served 15 years as head lifeguard at Mantoloking beach, for challenging local building codes to build Mantoloking's first elevated, pile supported house that was the only structure in the neighborhood to survive Superstorm Sandy, and for owning "Haven", the biggest yacht at Mantoloking Yacht Club for 20 years; died Wednesday at Ocean Medical Center, Brick, after battling pancreatic cancer. He was 75 years old. Ed grew up in Point Pleasant Borough before the town had a high school and so attended Point Pleasant Beach High School. That's where he met Betsy Gillingham, a Mantoloking resident. They both attended Trenton State Teachers' College (now The College of New Jersey) before being married and beginning lifelong public-school teaching careers. Ed taught industrial arts in the Toms River Regional district and Betsy taught elementary school in Point Pleasant Borough.

Ed and Betsy have two adult children. Amy and her husband Jacques Neukom own and operate a sustenance organic farm in northern California. David is an executive at Simon Property Group, the largest shopping mall operator in the U.S., and lives in Indianapolis. They have two grandchildren, Hazel and Emma in California. Ed's sister Gerry is a retired teacher and lives in Mount Laurel. Much of Ed's life centered on boats - his and those of his neighbors. The location of the slip where Haven, a 38-foot Krogan sloop, resided was the intersection of the Yacht Club's two main docks, and Ed's constant presence on the boat made for regular conversation with other boat owners and club members. He was always ready with advice, an appropriate tool, or actual assistance for anyone experiencing a problem. And Haven spent a lot of time underway. Betsy and Ed regularly sailed to Newport and other New England destinations during the summer and spent many winters living on Haven in Florida after sailing her down the ICW. Haven now belongs to Yacht Club Officer Mike Spark and remains in the same slip. Plans are being made for a celebration of Ed's life at St. Simon-by-the-Sea Church, Mantoloking.
