Dr. Edwyn M. Smith Obituary
Dr. Edwyn M. Smith

Tinton Falls - Dr. Edwyn M. Smith died Thursday, January 11, 2018 at Seabrook Village. He was 80.

Born in Newark, Ed attended Muhlenberg College, graduating in 1959, and received his D.D.S. degree from Temple University School of Dentistry in 1963. He served in the Army and the Army Reserves and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain in 1965. He most recently resided in Long Branch for twenty one years before settling in Tinton Falls in 2016. Ed managed a successful and respected dental practice in Lakewood from 1965 through 2009, with his longtime assistants Mavis Nauialis Guarasi and Nancy Zagari Shan. He always took tremendous pride in his work, his profession and the care he provided to his patients.

In his youth, Ed was a notable athlete and lettered in baseball and football. He was an avid golfer throughout his life and was a member of Woodlake Country Club and later, Eagle Oaks Golf and Country Club. Ed was a disciplined and rigorous casino gambler, as well as an expert card player, with a particular devotion to high stakes gin games. Ed was a long-time member of the Lakewood chapter of the Rotary Club. He was a member of the American Dental Association, the New Jersey Dental Society, and had served as Secretary of the Board of the Ocean Cove Condominium Association.

An only child, Ed was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Margaret Smith, of Lakewood.

Surviving are his loving wife of fifty six years, Sondra; as well as his daughter Michelle, son Paul and daughter-in-law Jodi, and grandchildren Corinne, Kimberly and Alexander (and his granddog, Bossie). Ed's extended family includes Dr. Samuel DiCapua and his wife Betsy, their daughters Caitlin and Brittany; Mr. Christopher DiCapua and Mr. Oscar Cabrera; Mr. Peter DiCapua and his wife Tracey and their children; Mr. Bernard Hertzberg and his wife Phyllis; and Mr. Jerrold Kolton and his wife Carol, and their family. All of them are deeply saddened by Ed's passing.

Ed had a knack for finding friends wherever he travelled, and for making the best of any circumstances he found himself in. He was a long time cancer survivor who met his challenges with optimism and unyielding strength until his passing. He was especially grateful to his oncologist, Dr. Kenneth Nahum, for his many years of care and concern. Ed's generous spirit will truly be missed by those close to him.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 10AM at Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, 2130 Rte. 35, Ocean. Interment will immediately follow at B'Nai Abraham Cemetery, Union. For more information, or to post a tribute online, please visit www.bloomfieldcooperocean.com.
