AGE: 85 • Middletown

Elizabeth Bartley, 85, of Middletown, NJ, died on January 13, 2017 at her home. She was born in Ralls, TX to the late Olin and Ruby Bartley. After graduating from college, Elizabeth was a band teacher and band director in Texas and also taught Physical Ed and Drivers Ed here in New Jersey at Keyport High School. She began her career at Keyport on September 1, 1959 and retired on June 30, 1992. Elizabeth also coached softball and field hockey. She started coaching in the early '70s and, as softball coach, won 6 straight conference championships and 4 Central Jersey State Championships, as a field hockey coach she won 3 Central Jersey State Championships in 4 years. She also coached at Middletown HS North, Matawan Regional, and at Kane College. Elizabeth was also a basketball and field hockey official for the Shore Conference and she is a past president of the NJEA in Keyport. After her retirement, Elizabeth was a World Traveller. Elizabeth was a feminist ahead of her time; a real, true advocate for girls, especially in athletics.

Surviving are her sister, Kathleen Cherry Buffington; her three nieces, Susan Moorhouse, Elizabeth Ellsworth, and Paula Bartley; and her two nephews, John Cherry, Scott Cherry.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her father, Olin Bartley, mother, Ruby Bartley-Godfrey, her brother, Joe Bartley, and her niece, Janet Lewis.

A Memorial Gathering will be held Friday, February 3, 2017 from 6-8 pm at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown. A Memorial Service is scheduled for 7:30 pm at the funeral home. For more information, to send condolences or for directions, please visit
