Oakhurst - Erb James Thorpe, age 90, of Oakhurst, passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2018. Erb (Jimmy) was born and raised in Jackson, KY, on December 8, 1927, to the late Seldon and Belle (Johnson) Thorpe. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in the 82nd Airborne Division. While attending Signal School at Fort Monmouth, he met the love of his life, Shirley Mathilda Lundy. They married and had 66 years of wedded bliss. They raised four daughters and lived in Oakhurst for over 60 years. Erb worked as an electronic technician at E.A.I in West Long Branch for 30 years. During his leisure time, he enjoyed traveling, camping, family get-togethers, science, genealogy, reading and writing about his life and his philosophies. Erb was a Commissioned Honorable Kentucky Colonel and a Duke of Hazard, Commissioned an Honorable Citizen of the City of Hazard, KY. Erb is predeceased by his wife Shirley, his parents, his sisters and brothers and a son in law, Theodore Heleotis. Surviving are his four daughters and their husbands; Deborah Cook and husband Marvin L. of Neptune; Diane Heleotis of Neptune; Denise Cole and husband Thomas of Freehold and Darlene Larkin and husband Peter of Freehold; eleven grandchildren and eight-great grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at Ballard United Methodist Church, 1515 Fourth Ave., Asbury Park, on Sunday, April 8, 2018, at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the church. Interment will be private at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ.
