Eugene G. "Hugh" McCullough Obituary
Eugene "Hugh" G. McCullough

AGE: 91 • Brielle

Eugene G. "Hugh" McCullough, 91, of Brielle, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at home. Hugh was born on Feb. 1, 1922 in Panama. His parents were American citizens employed in the Panama Canal Zone. The family returned to the U.S. in 1924, and settled in Bloomfield, NJ. He attended Bloomfield High School, where he excelled in sports, and was eventually inducted into the Bloomfield Athletic Hall of Fame. Hugh had a lifelong passion for sports, fitness, and exercise, and he worked for many years as a basketball referee and baseball umpire, officiating at countless games throughout the Jersey shore area. He served in the Army during WWII in the China Burma Theater, discharged in 1945 as a Master Sergeant.

He also lived in New York City, and Point Pleasant Beach, before moving to Brielle in 1964. He held a Master's Degree in Education from Montclair University. He began a long career in education with the Wayne Township School District as an elementary school teacher. He was hired by the Howell Township School District in 1960, and became the Principal of the Southard School. He was soon promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Schools, a position he held until his retirement in 1987. He was also the Director of the Child Study Team. The majority of his career was devoted to children with special needs, and programs developed under his tenure served as models for other districts throughout the county and the state. He served on the Board of Trustees for the Monmouth County Head Start Program, and was the Director of the Howell Township summer program for the learning handicapped. He also served on the Brielle Recreation Commission.

He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Sophie. He is survived by his son, Robert McCullough of Arlington, Massachusetts; and his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and S. Gregory Karn and two grandchildren of Howell.

Arrangements are private under the direction of the O'Brien Funeral Home, Wall. Donations can be made in Hugh's name to the Special Olympics, 1133 19th St. NW, Washington, DC 20036. For further information or to send condolences to the family, please visit
