Lakewood - LAKEWOOD - Eugene A Schlehuber, 85, of Lakewood, formerly of Union, NJ, passed away at home peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, March 15 2018, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was the husband of Lotte Schlehuber. The couple lived most of their lives in Union, having moved there from Newark in 1963.

Born in Augsburg, Germany, to the late Eugene and Josefa Schlehuber, Eugene completed his apprenticeship as an industrial electrician in 1950. Eugene immigrated to the United States in early 1952 following in the footsteps of several relatives, working initially as an electrician in Maplewood and Hillside. In late 1952, Eugene enlisted in the United States Army, and was a Korean War era veteran. Having completed basic training at Fort Dix, Eugene was assigned to Fort Bragg followed by Camp Gordon and graduated from the Signal Corp. as a Communication Specialist. Eugene served in Korea as a member of the 97th Engineering Company until his honorable discharge in 1955.

Eugene married Lotte in December 1958 and settled in Newark, NJ. Purchasing their first home, they moved to Union in 1963 where they raised their sons Steven and Glen. Eugene worked for Sears Roebuck and Company for more than 38 years, until his retirement as a manager of the electronics, appliance, and machine repair operations. Eugene was a kind, caring, and loving husband and father and cherished spending time with his family. He was an avid soccer fan and enjoyed attending games and following his favorite teams. Eugene was a passive member of the Schwabischer Sangerbund out of the Deutscher Club of Clark for over 40 years. He was active in his community bocce league and enjoyed weekly card games with his close circle of friends.

He is survived by his two sons, Steven R Schlehuber, and his wife, Catherine, of Marlborough, Massachusetts, and Glen F Schlehuber, and his wife, Shirin, of Bondi Beach, NSW, Australia. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Carissa R Larios and her husband Robert, Jake A Schlehuber, and Jenna J Schlehuber, and great grandson Max Larios, all of Marlborough, Massachusetts, several nieces and nephews, and a great group of lifelong friends. He is predeceased by his older sister, Lilly Popp, of Westerville, Ohio.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on March 24, 2018 from 2-4PM at the D'Elia Funeral Home 1300 Vermont Ave Lakewood, NJ 08701, followed by a memorial service at 4PM.
