Frances Rose McKee Obituary
Frances Rose McKee

AGE: 84 • formerly of Long Branch

Frances Rose McKee, nee Esposito, born October 1932 in Bronx, New York and formerly of Rosewood Avenue, Long Branch, died Friday evening 21 April at Riverview Medical Center. She was 84 years old.

Frances grew up on East 157th St., Bronx, NY. In 1951, she enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served as a clerk and driver during the Korean War. Close associates recall that she was a terrible driver all her life, which led to some of her colourful stories. She loved history and studied to be a teacher. In 1954, she wed Joseph Devoe, a US Marine. They had two children, Joseph, who passed away in 2008 and Nora. When they were posted to San Francisco, she enjoyed a brief career as a lounge singer and entertainer (1959-1962).

Frances McKee is perhaps best known around the New Jersey Shore for the period she called her 'salad days' when she worked at the Surf Lounge, Long Branch (1962-1977). She published a book, Mobsters I have Known and Loved, (Wasteland Press, 2009), about the laughter and warmth in her life during this period.

In April, 1974 Frances married Raymond McKee (deceased 2000) Frances was a resident of Brighton Gardens, Middletown for two and a half years before her passing. She continued to read English history and could imitate any accent until her death. Her sense of slightly riske fun marked her best years.

She is survived by her daughter Nora Devoe and son-in law Ashley Sparrow (Australia) and her sisters Georgi- Ann Albano and Darlene Gaudios (Middletown), her companion Leon Weyhknecht. New York family and close friends around the Shore. Frances was exuberance personified and she will be dearly missed.

Visitation will be at the Hoffman Funeral Home, 415 Broadway, Long Branch on Wednesday, April 26th from 3-5pm and 7-9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 am Thursday, April 27th at Our Lady Star of The Sea R.C. Church of Christ The King Parish, Long Branch.
