AGE: 92 • Brick

Francis John Tomaino, 92, joined his beloved Annie, on August 25, 2017, at Claremont Care Center, Point Pleasant. Born on August 10, 1924 in Point Pleasant Beach to Samuel Tomaino and the former Nicoletta Mancuso, he graduated from Point Pleasant Beach High School in 1942.

His service in World War II , included the invasion of Salerno, assignment to a POW Camp and time in Southern France, eventually becoming staff sergeant. He returned home in November, 1945.

He graduated from Rider College on August 19, 1949 and took over Tomaino's Shoe Store which his mother founded. At a New Year's Day party in 1951 at Michael's Pleasant Inn in Point Pleasant, meeting the owner's daughter, Ann Lucy DeSimone, he told his friend, "I'm going to marry that girl." They married on October 21, 1951and had three children, Samuel (1952), Michael (1955) and Barbara (1959). Fran put shoes on generations of feet and was a member of Rotary, Elks, Lions Club (Past President) and V.F.W. Post 4715 (Past Commander). He sponsored Little League and coached in the Jersey Shore League. He served on the Point Pleasant Beach School Board for 4 ½ years, including as Vice-President. A lifelong communicant of St. Peter's Parish, he was an usher for more than 50 years and also a trustee.

Fran retired in 1986, becoming a babysitter to his grandchildren, Christopher and Nicole, moved to Princeton Commons retirement community in Brick and worked at Risden's Beach from 1994 until 2008. Awards include the Point Pleasant Beach Hall of Fame and the New Jersey Distinguished Service Award for his war service. Ann died in 2008 and he missed her terribly, kissing her picture every night. He rooted for the New York Yankees and his friend from Jersey Shore League, Todd Frazier of the Chicago White Sox, who called him during his last hospital stay.

Francis Tomaino is survived by his sister: Joyce Tomaino of Brick, his sons: Samuel and Michael Tomaino both of Brick, his daughter: Barbara Kaklamanis and son-in-law: John Kaklamanis of Point Pleasant and his grandchildren: Christopher and Nicole Kaklamanis.

Visiting will be Sunday, April 30, 2017 from 1-5pm at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11am, Monday, May 1, 2017 at St. Peter's RC Church, 406 Forman Ave, Point Pleasant Beach. Burial will be at St. Catharine's Cemetery, Sea Girt.
