Gay N. Gernert Obituary
Gay N. Gernert

Toms River - Gay N. Gernert, 91, of Toms River, NJ, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 15th, 2018, at the Ocean Medical Center in Brick. She was one of eight children born to Burnell and Bettie Gay Overton. She was born in Farmville, VA, on April 17th, 1926. She graduated, with honors, from Farmville H.S. in 1944. Immediately upon graduation, Gay went to work at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. She met "the love of her life", Charles R. Gernert. They were married on February 2nd, 1946.

Gay and Charles moved to Toms River in 1953. She went to work at a Toms River School cafeteria so she could be home with her family. Once her children were in school all day, she went to work at the Toms River Chemical Company, later known as Ciba-Geigy, and became the cafeteria manager. Gay was a dedicated and conscientious worker for the company for 27 years until her retirement.

Gay was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Toms River for over 50 years! She loved her family and her church. She was a wonderful, loving mother, who always put her family first. Gay was a beautiful person inside and out and will be greatly missed.

Gay was predeceased by her parents, Burnell and Bettie Gay Overton; her husband of 64 years, Charles R. Gernert; her son "Tony", and all eight of her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her loving daughter Vicki Gernert and companion Stewart Isenburg of Brick; her very special friend Ingrid Busch who meant a lot to her and whom she loved dearly; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Sunday, February 25th, 2018, from 2-4 and 7-9 PM, at the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main Street, Toms River, NJ 08753. The Funeral Service will be Monday at 11 AM, at the First United Methodist Church of Toms River, 129 Chestnut Street, Toms River, NJ. Interment will follow at the Ocean County Memorial Park, 1722 Silverton Road, Toms River, NJ. Donations in Gay's memory may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Toms River.
