George Anikow Obituary

George Anikow

AGE: 41 • Manila, Philippines

George Anikow, 41, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012 in Manila, Philippines. George was a resident of Herndon, VA, but has been living in Manila since August 2012. George was born on May 28, 1971 in Howell, NJ to Saveta and the late Tscheda Anikow. He graduated from Howell High School in 1989 and earned a Bachelor's of Arts in 1993 from the University of Rhode Island. Dedicated to a life of service, George achieved the rank of Major in the U.S. Marine Corps. He joined the Marines in 1993 and served 8 years (1994-2001) as an infantryman and was currently on assignment as an Individual Mobilization Augmentee. George was a platoon commander with the 1st Marines/3rd Division, Kaneohe, Hawaii; S-3 with CSSG-3, and S-2 with HQMC. George successfully completed a 9-month combat tour in Afghanistan in 2009, where he served as Acting Executive Officer for the 4th Civil Affairs Group, 8th & I Marines, in charge of developing relationships with the local Afghan population. George was currently assigned with the J-5, Joint Chiefs of Staff. MAJ Anikow earned numerous awards and distinctions during his military career, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and the Humanitarian Service Medal. He has also served his country in the Diplomatic Security Service and the State Department.

George dedicated his spare time to his children and his community. He was an enthusiastic and beloved soccer and baseball coach, and an active participant in his daughter's competitive cheer program. He was always ready to help a neighbor or friend in need. He loved his family with his whole heart yet he saved some space for his community and the friends he made there. George was the best of us all, he was a devoted family man, a loving son, a great friend, and a true patriot.

George is survived by his wife of 15 years, Laura Anikow; son, Jacob; and daughters, Grace and Sophie of Herndon, VA; mother, Saveta and sister Lishma of Howell; sister, Mary of Jersey City; sister, Ilma of Honolulu, HI; and a niece, Julia Kubeck, as well as close cousins too numerous to mention.

A service celebrating his life will be held at the DiCostanzo family owned Lakewood Funeral Home, 6250 Highway 9, Howell, with a viewing from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2 and funeral service at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, with a religious service, followed by a family eulogy at 1:30 p.m. and Military Honors at 2:30 p.m. For further directions, please visit www.funeralhomenj.com. Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Marine Major George Anikow our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for George. And to George it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. George, you are a true American patriot, who served with honor and distinction. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to George's family and loved ones.

Back in the early '70s, when I was 13 years old, my cousin Dave and I babysat our little cousin, George. George was maybe one year old.... Here we were, two young teenage guys, with no baby experience :), trying to keep George happy. As luck would have it, George started crying. No amount of binkies or bottles could stop him....I don't know whose idea this was, but one of us lit a candle and George was completely mesmerized. For the next few hours, the three of us sat there, staring at this candle, until our parents came home. As we all grew older, we always had fun among the cousins repeating this story, with George "pretending" he didn't remember this event :). We will always remember you, Georgeman. You will live on in our hearts forever. With all of our love, Your cousin Mike & Family.
