Gertrude "Gert" Murphy Obituary
Gertrude "Gert" Murphy

AGE: 86 • Middletown

Gertrude "Gert" Murphy, 86, of Middletown Twp., NJ, passed away peacefully and in the arms of her beloved family on July 9, 2017 at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank.

Surviving are her children and their spouses, Marilyn Lee Murphy Trachtenberg and Christian Parella, Janet Lee Murphy Lane and William J. Lane, James Albert Murphy and Linda Chirchello Murphy, Mark Murphy and Jolene Steele, and Caryn Lee Murphy Hargrave and David Hargrave; grandchildren, Allyson Lee Murphy Rescorl and William Rescorl, Alexandra Rose Murphy, David Murphy Hargrave, and Audie Murphy Hargrave; and great granddaughter Avery Jade Rescorl.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, Albert E. Murphy, and their daughter Deborah Lee Murphy.

Gert was born in Jersey City, NJ and remained endeared to her family and friends with whom she grew up there. She met "Murph" at a dance, they started their family among friends and their extended families on DeKalb Avenue, and were so proud to be able to move their family to Hazlet, where they and their children developed life-long friendships with families living around Franciscan Way. Gert worked in the Accounting Dept. of Two Guys in Middletown from the mid-1960s until it closed around 1981.

The family moved to Leonardo, in Middletown Twp., in 1973, and Gert began working at Monmouth University (then Monmouth College) around 1981. Incredibly, she worked full-time for 33 years, until she was 82 years old. She is remembered by countless students whom she helped in her position as the MBA Administrator, and also generations of staff. As anybody who knew her was aware, she could have conquered the world if she had been given the opportunities of a different generation. What we all know, is that her family and friends are what mattered to her most.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2017, from 4-8 pm at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown. A Funeral Liturgy will be offered Friday, July 14, 2017 at 10:30 am at St Mary's Chapel, 26 Leonardville Rd., Middletown.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Gertrude's name to the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, which treated her own mother Catherine Flannigan Cummings, or to a veterans' organization of your choice, many of which Gert supported in memory of her brother Jack Cummings, a POW of WWII.
