Gladys Willman Obituary
Gladys Willman

Long Branch - Gladys Willman passed away peacefully in her home on March 24, 2018. Gladys was born in Plainfield, New Jersey in 1926. She enjoyed a long and happy marriage to Roland "Bob" Willman of Newark, New Jersey. Gladys and Bob started their married life in Newark and moved to the Jersey Shore in 1953 where they raised their three children Ben, Stephany and Connie.

Throughout her life, Gladys had a passion for biology. She was a naturalist at heart and a devotee of Charles Darwin, who could easily be spotted driving around with her DNA RNA plates. She graduated from the University of Ohio with a major in biology. When her children were young she served as a substitute teacher at Asbury Park High School. Later, Gladys became a Biology and Anatomy teacher at Ocean Township High School where she taught for 30 years. Gladys was a beloved teacher who made a significant impact on generations of high school students. She inspired students with her passion for science and critical thinking. She was an early crusader for combating the effects of global warming. In the early 1970s she and her students placed a wind mill on the roof of the high school to demonstrate the ways in which clean energy could be produced.

Gladys was an avid bird watcher. On many weekend mornings she could be found traipsing through the Pine Barrens searching for a rare bird. She also made several trips to Panama to study the ecology of the rainforest and identify birds and wildlife. In addition, Gladys was an avid bridge player and crossword pro, proudly completing the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle each week.

A devoted mother and wife, Gladys is survived by her son, Ben Willman of Portland, OR and daughter, Stephany Willman of Long Branch New Jersey. Gladys had special affection for her four grandsons, Rolan and Marlon Meyer of New York City and Eli and Sam Willman of Portland, OR.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Planned Parenthood of New Jersey or for at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel.
