AGE: 90 • Oakhurst

Dr. Harold Gabel, 90, of Oakhurst, passed away on Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch. Harold was born on March 9, 1923 to Morris and Esther Gabel in New York City and has resided in Oakhurst for 63 years.

Harold was predeceased by his beloved wife, Adelaide Harriet Hocky Gabel, who died on Aug. 1, 2013, after 67 years of marriage. He was also predeceased by his brother, Richard Gabel, and wife Louise. He is survived by his children, Robert, Ted, Michael, George, Kathy, Steven, and Daniel, as well as their spouses and 15 grandchildren, Pearl, David, Alan, Maddie, Jeremy, Max, Zander, Lauren, Mark, Isaac, Eli, Eve, Belle, Jessie, and Jamie.

He attended Stuyvesant High School, Columbia College, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and served in the United States Army from 1943-50. Harold moved to Oakhurst in 1950. Their home was a fixture for a generation of neighborhood children. He was a classic master physician who cared for his patients and family above all else. He closed his office on Oct. 10, 2010, but continued to volunteer at the Parker Clinic in Red Bank until October 2012. Active at Monmouth Medical Center for 60 years, he especially loved teaching the new residents. He has been a devoted member of Temple Beth Miriam in Elberon, and a past president of the Monmouth Medical Society and the JCC of Deal.

Harold enjoyed travel with his wife Addie, photography, woodworking, and his tomato garden; bridge, tennis, and handball with friends; chess, poker, handball, and cigars with his children and grandchildren. He was respected and loved by all who knew him. Eleven days after his beloved wife's passing, Dr. Harold Gabel died, age 90, of a broken heart.

A private service was held Tuesday. Shiva and visitation will be observed at 1048 Norwood Avenue in Oakhurst on Wednesday, Aug. 14 and Thursday, Aug. 15, from 2-5 PM and 7-9 PM and on Friday, Aug. 16, from 2-5 PM.
