Harry J. Garbe, Jr.

AGE: 93 • Toms River

Harry J. Garbe Jr., 93, of Toms River, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, November 24, 2017.

Born and raised in Riverside, NJ, Harry moved to Toms River in 1955. He honorably served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WW II, surviving the Battle of Iwo Jima. Harry was committed to education, receiving his Bachelor's degree from NJ State Teachers College, his master's degree from Trenton State College, and completing further graduate work at Northwestern University. After 27 years in the NJ State Police he retired at the rank of Captain and Commandant of the Academy in Sea Girt. Harry later retired from the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City as Director of Compliance. He loved sports and was inducted into the Riverside HS Sports Hall of Fame and captained the tennis team in college. Additionally, he was a football official at the Jersey Shore for over 50 consecutive years. He was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Joseph's Church, a member of the Marine Corps League, and Former Troopers Association. He loved spending time with his cherished family and friends and will be dearly missed by all.

He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Bessie Garbe, and his brother, William Garbe. Surviving is his beloved wife of 62 years, Eileen (Carroll) Garbe; his loving children: Brian Garbe (Bob Ort), Shawn Garbe (Paula), Patrick Garbe (Mary), Colleen Castaldo (John) and Noeleen McLoughlin; his sister-in-law, Geri Garbe; brother-in-law Fr. Emmett Carroll, O.F.M. Conv.; 14 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 30, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main Street, Toms River, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 685 Hooper Ave., Toms River. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Toms River. In lieu of flowers please donate to St. Joseph's Century Club.
