Harry W. Johanson

Chadwick Beach Island, NJ - Harry W. Johanson

Age 91 of Lavallette, NJ

Harry William Johanson of Chadwick Beach Island passed into eternal rest on January 5, 2018 at Ocean Medical Center surrounded by his dearest friends. He was born in Newark NJ on August 20, 1926. Harry was the devoted son of Harry and Mabel Johanson.

Harry grew up in Bloomfield NJ and served in the US Navy during

World War II on the Coastal Transport Ship USS APc 42 in the Asiatic - Pacific Theatre. Much of Harry's career following his return from the war was spent working for PPG in East Rutherford NJ where he retired as Facility Manager.

In 1958, Harry bought a cottage in Ocean Beach III, where he spent as much of the summer as possible. Here, lifelong friendships were forged.

After his retirement in 1987, he purchased a home on Chadwick Island, overlooking Barnegat Bay. Harry's home was a welcoming place for his many friends, old and new, young and old, from near or far. It was a regular stopping place for a visit, to chat, share a meal, or play a serious game of Dominoes.

In earlier years, Harry traveled extensively, both in the US and Europe. In recent times, he enjoyed visits to Atlantic City.

Harry enjoyed his home, he liked to cook and he made the world's best rice pudding. He loved the Bay and the wildlife residing there, especially the ducks that came and pecked at the patio door.

Harry loved animals and treasured the memory of his black lab, Tara.

Harry never had a bad word to say about anyone, he was a kind man and he lived a noble life. He was proud of his home, his heritage and his service to his country. He treasured his friends and time spent with them. We are all better for having known him. Trust that he will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

Harry attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Seaside Heights, NJ.

Harry is survived by his lifelong friend, Charles G. (Buddy) Flanagan, with whom he resided, by a cousin, Dorothy Rosefeldt (Paul) in Pennsylvania and by his many faithful, loving friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Charles Johanson, his nephew Lee Johanson and sister-in-law Ginny Johanson.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to Save Barnegat Bay (117 Haines Road Toms River, NJ 08753) or Popcorn Park Zoo (1 Humane Way, Forked River, NJ 08731).

The viewing will be held on Tuesday January 9, 2018 from 3:30-6:30pm at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals 809 Central Ave. Seaside Park, NJ.
