Helga Marianne (nee Curtius) Rodgers

Helga Marianne nee Curtius Rodgers passed away peacefully surrounded by the comfort and in the care of her family on Friday, August 11th. Helga was born in Neumarkt, Silesia and lived an interesting and storied life centered on caring for her family and others, she knew no strangers. Helga is predeceased by her parents, Heinrich and Anneliese Curtius. She is survived by her husband, Lt. Col. Sterling M. (USAR, Ret.), and children: Linda (Charlie) Exley, Paul (Cheri), Heidi (Mike) Riley, Chris (Jane), and Ralph and brother, Heinz-Dieter Curtius of Wurzburg, Germany. She adored being Oma to Amy(Ken) Brockel, Sarah (Jeff) Ulander, Brett Exley, Jennifer (Travis) Walczak, Hillary, Hannah, Alec and Nolan Rodgers and Ur-Oma to Morgan and Makenzie Brockel, Madelyn, Brayden and Hudson Ulander, and Olive, Annaliese and Melody Walczak, and many nieces and nephews, and children of friends and neighbors.

As an active member of Luther Memorial Church for 49 years, Helga was a Stephen Minister, coordinated events such as the annual German Christmas service and hosted international groups such as the Golden Trumpets, in addition, serving as greeter and coffee hour host with Sterling.

Other activities included support to military families, Gray Lady with the Kingsville (TX) AFB infirmary, and a Red Cross case worker for individuals with brain injuries. Helga was personally recognized by President Chiang Kai-shek for serving as an English language teacher to the Taiwanese Army while stationed in Taiwan.

While her earthly presence will be missed by all who had the privilege to know her, her family and those she loved will carry on demonstrating the life lessons she shared of duty to others and Christ, self-care and forgiveness of others and determination to always be a better person.

Friends and family are invited to view from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at the Ely Funeral Home, Neptune. A funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at the Lutheran Memorial Church 818 Tinton Ave. Tinton Falls, NJ 07724.
