As an active member of Luther Memorial Church for 49 years, Helga was a Stephen Minister, coordinated events such as the annual German Christmas service and hosted international groups such as the Golden Trumpets, in addition, serving as greeter and coffee hour host with Sterling.

Other activities included support to military families, Gray Lady with the Kingsville (TX) AFB infirmary, and a Red Cross case worker for individuals with brain injuries. Helga was personally recognized by President Chiang Kai-shek for serving as an English language teacher to the Taiwanese Army while stationed in Taiwan.
