AGE: 85 • Toms River formerly of Clark

Herbert Adolph Muth (Happy Herb), 85, of Toms River formally of Clark died peacefully at home on Tuesday March 21, 2017. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at the Toms River Elks, 600 Washington St. Toms River, NJ 08753 on Saturday April 15, 2017 beginning at 1pm until 5pm.

Born and raised in Clark, Mr. Muth graduated from Dayton Regional High School in 1949. After graduation, Mr. Muth began working at Merck & Co. in Rahway, but was soon drafted to the U.S. Army where he served as a Sniper and Bar Riflemen in the Korean War with the Second Infantry Division for 18 months. While serving, he obtained the rank of Corporal and received numerous awards including The Combat Infantry Badge, along with One Bronze Star when he was honorably discharged. Upon discharge, Mr. Muth returned to Merck & Co. where he held a 38 year career in various positions working his way up and retiring as a Mechanical Supervisor in 1988.

Mr. Muth enjoyed bowling and golfing. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting or fishing, but most importantly, crabbing with his grandchildren. Organizations he belonged to included Clark American Legion Post 328, where he was a past commander and a life member, Clark VFW, Free Masons Lafayette Lodge #27 in Rahway, an active member of the George Cranmer Deer Club, Gilford Park Yacht Club, and more recently, Toms River Elks #1875.

Mr. Muth was predeceased by his first wife, Violet (Faley) Muth; his second wife, Mary Lou (Jones Matukaitus) Muth; and his brother, William H. Muth. He is survived by his sister, Carolyn Kradjel and husband Donald of Sarasota, FL. He is also survived by his daughters, Kathleen Horvath and husband Raymond of So. Plainfield; Susan Hawley of Slippery Rock, PA; and step-daughter Lynn Lauri and husband Rick of Shickshinny, PA. He was the loving grandfather of Shannon, Samantha, and Keith Horvath; Ben, Nic, and Joe Hawley; Jill and Kelly Fashauer; and nephews Billy, Mark, and Michael Muth, and niece Priscilla McSherry.
