Herrald A. "Harry" Schunk Obituary
Herrald A. "Harry" Schunk

AGE: 86 • Freehold

Herrald A. "Harry" Schunk, 86, of Freehold, NJ passed away peacefully after a brief illness, surrounded by family, on March 10, 2017 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Sarasota, Florida. Harry was born in Paterson, New Jersey, the oldest of three children, to the late Herald A. and Ruth M. Schunk. Soon thereafter, at Totowa Presbyterian Church Sunday School, he met the love of his life and future wife of 62 years, Peggy Anderson Schunk. He attended Central High School in Paterson, graduating in 1947. Harry was inducted into the Army in 1951 and served as an artillery gunner in Korea, attaining a rank of Sergeant First Class. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal W/2, Bronze Service Stars, and the UN Service Medal. After the Army and while a reservist, he entered Newark College of Engineering and in 1957 earned a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Mechanical Engineering, graduating Tau Beta Pi. He furthered his academic work at Rutgers University, receiving a Master of Business Administration degree in 1962 and became a registered professional industrial engineer in 1969. Harry was an employee of the Permacel division of Johnson & Johnson in New Brunswick, NJ and later worked for most of his career as an industrial engineer at J.C. Penney headquarters in New York City, specializing in warehouse construction and logistics. He initiated a long and productive retirement in 1989, allowing Peggy and him to travel the world, often by cruise ship. When back at home, Harry became involved in many interests and hobbies, including painting, bridge, gardening and bocce, and participated in many community committees. But he was probably known best for his exquisite woodcarvings of wildlife and the occasional caricature.

A long-time resident of Piscataway, NJ, Harry engineered and constructed a large addition to the house, as well as a second garage. While living there, he and Peggy were both very active in the Bound Brook Presbyterian Church. Well after both children had flown the coop, in 1996 he and Peggy moved into a house they had built at Four Seasons in Wall, NJ. For the last five years, they have lived at Applewood Estates in Freehold, NJ. They have been active in the Manasquan Presbyterian Church for the last 21 years.

Harry was preceded in death by his younger brother Ralph by just 19 days. He is survived by his loving wife Peggy of Freehold, NJ, sister Edie Lysaght of Reston, VA, and sister-in-law Carol Mercer of The Villages, FL. He is also survived by son David Schunk and wife Rhonda of Houston, TX, and his daughter Eileen Ryan and husband Andrew of Brooklyn, NY. He adored his five grandchildren and is survived by Kevin Ryan, Justine Martirano and husband Anthony, Sean Ryan, Rebecca Sharpe and husband Zachary, and Christopher Schunk.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life Service at Manasquan Presbyterian Church at 11:30am on Friday March 24th, to be followed by a repast. A private burial will be at Bound Brook Presbyterian Church in Bound Brook, NJ at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Harry's memory to the Manasquan Presbyterian Church, 16 Virginia Avenue, Manasquan, NJ 08736. Arrangements are under the care of the Orender Family Home for Funerals, Manasquan. To send condolences to the family please visit
