AGE: 82 • South Seaside Park

April 20, 1934-February 19, 2017

Mr. Howard Saloom, 82, of South Seaside Park, Berkeley Township, NJ formerly of North Brunswick, NJ passed away Sunday February 19, 2017 at Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ.

He was the husband of 56 years to Betty (Kelch) Saloom.

Born April 20, 1934 in New Brunswick, NJ he was the son of the late Howard and Bertha Saloom of New Brunswick, NJ.

Howard proudly served as a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War, and earned an honorable discharge in February 1961. He went on to a successful career as a Master Plumber and Facilities Manager for Johnson & Johnson, in New Brunswick, NJ; Atlantic Development and Management Corporation in Warren, NJ and Crown Bank in Elizabeth, NJ, retiring in 2006. He served his community by serving on the Berkeley Township Zoning Hearing Board for 8 years and the Board of Elections in Ocean County, most recently working the polls during the November 2016 election.

He cherished his time with his family at the beach and serving on the Board of Directors of the Vintage Automobile Museum of New Jersey, located in Point Pleasant, NJ. An avid restorer, preserver and collector of 1950's and 1960's era automobiles, Howard was active in local parades and classic auto show events and recognized for driving and showing his 1964-1/2 Mustang Fastback. He would often be seen walking along the shoreline with his beloved dogs, Max and Beautiful.

Howard was preceded in death by his brothers Samuel Saloom and David H. Saloom, and his sisters, Selma and Lillian. Howard is survived by his brother George Saloom, of North Brunswick, NJ and Alice Cicio, of Old Bridge, NJ and Esther Shamy, of North Brunswick, NJ.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Betty (Kelch) Saloom, of South Seaside Park, Berkeley Township, NJ and his daughter, Renee (Saloom) Chesler and her husband, David of Royersford, PA and his son, Richard Saloom, and his wife Tami of Forked River, NJ.

He is also survived by two grandsons, Trevor Chesler and Ryan Chesler, of Royersford, PA.

Friends and family are invited to a Memorial Service and Luncheon to celebrate his life on March 11, 2017. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Tri-boro Rescue Squad, 61 J Street, Seaside Park, NJ 08752.
