Inez Smith Tice

AGE: 83 • Jackson

Inez Smith Tice, age 83, passed away Friday, November 18, 2016, at the Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ. She was born and raised in Lakewood. She attended the School No. 5 and graduated from Lakewood High School in 1951. Inez graduated from Monmouth (College) University in 1972 with a B.S. degree. She was a legal secretary upon graduation from high school, then a school secretary and finally a first grade teacher in the Ella G. Clarke School and the Oak Street School in Lakewood, retiring in 1994.

Inez was active in the Girl Scouts of America as a scout herself, then a leader of Brownie Troop 21 and Neighborhood Chairman for Lakewood. She loved working with children and was a counselor and treasurer for the YWCA Summer Day Camp for many years. Inez was an accomplished clarinetist and was proud to be a member of the Shore Conference Band, the South Jersey Band and the NJ All State Band while in high school. As a teenager she was a member of the marching bands of Lakewood High School and the American Legion Post 129 in Toms River where she met Jerry Tice, her husband. As an adult, Inez played her clarinet as a charter member of the Lakewood Municipal Band and also a musician in the Georgian Court University Concert Band for more than 45 years. In 2014 Inez was inducted into the Lakewood High School Hall of Fame.

Inez was a member for 65 years of the First Presbyterian Church of Lakewood where she served as an Elder. She lent her alto voice to the Chancel Choir and her musical talent as a member of the church Bell Choir along with accompanying the Choir and the Congregation on the piano at times. She was an experienced sewer and needleworker and was a quilter with the Lakewood Centennial Quilters and the Hope Church Quilters.

Inez was proud of her Scottish heritage and was a member of the Flower of Scotland chapter of the Daughters of Scotia. She was active in the Red Hat Society as a member of the Red Sails in the Sunset, Lakewood and the Red Belles of South Knolls in Jackson. Inez and her husband Jerry loved to travel and toured England, Scotland, Holland, Germany and France as well as travels throughout the United States in their various RVs and as far north in Canada as the James Bay on their motorcycle.

Inez was predeceased by her brother H. Robert (Bobby) Smith, Jr., her parents, H. Robert Smith, Sr. and Ellen Macauley Smith and her husband of nearly 58 years, Jerald (Jerry) Albert Tice. Surviving are her three children, son Kenneth R. Tice and his wife Frances, of Elberon, son Keith A. Tice of Lanoka Harbor and daughter Beverly Tice Wittemann and her husband Wilbur of Middletown, DE and her sister K. E. Smith and her husband, Michael Bachem of Portland, ME. Also surviving are her four grandchildren, Allison Tice of Elberon, Kevan Tice of Long Branch, and Andrew and Aimee Tice of Lanoka Harbor. She is also survived by two nieces, Ellen A. Bachem and her wife Noël d'Albertis of Denver, CO and Alyce R. Bachem and her husband Loren Michael Hudson of Cincinnati, OH.

A memorial service will be held Saturday November 26th, 11:00 A.M., at the First Presbyterian Church, 313 3rd Street, Lakewood, NJ. Cremation will be private. Her cremated remains will be placed in the Lakewood Hope Chapel Cemetery.
