Irene A. Nichols

AGE: 80 • High Point, NC

Irene A. Nichols, age 80 passed away peacefully at her residence on Wednesday, December 21, 2016. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, December 30, 2016, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 2210 North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC with Monsignor Anthony Marcaccio officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Irene was born May 9, 1936, in Brooklyn, NY to the late Charles and Virginia O'Neill. Irene resided in Staten Island, NY and Colts Neck, NJ prior to moving to Greensboro, NC in 2010. Irene was a former Registered Nurse, primarily working as a School Nurse in the Colts Neck school system. She relished her role as a wife and mother, but her true joy was her four grandchildren. Irene was an active member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Colts Neck and was devoted in her faith. Irene and her late husband, Joe moved to Pennybryn at Maryfield in 2011 where she was able to attend daily mass and spend time in the Adoration Chapel. Irene was a friend to all and cared deeply for the residents, staff and volunteers at Pennybryn. Known to most people as "Grammy", she loved listening to music, card making, visiting with friends and shopping, especially for shoes, greeting cards and lipstick!

In addition to her parents, Irene was predeceased in death by her treasured husband of 54 years, Joseph L. Nichols; beloved infant daughter, Irene Ann Nichols; cherished sister, Dorothy M. Kenney and dear grandson, Sean William Spillane.

Those left holding her memory in their hearts are her children, Joanne Spillane and husband Bill, Joseph Nichols both of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren, Jennifer Spillane of Astoria, NY, Katherine and Joseph Spillane of Greensboro, and sister, Patricia O'Neill, RSM and Martha McKenna, RSM. Irene also leaves behind a loving extended family of relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 2-4pm and 7-9pm, Thursday, December 29, 2016 at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel, 515 North Elm Street. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in "Grammy's" name to Pennybryn at Maryfield, Development Office, Attn.: Edward Cordick, 109 Penny Rd., High Point, NC 27260.
