James Abernethy Obituary
James Abernethy

Decorated NYC fireman, devoted husband, father, and great-grandfather. James Abernethy of Deerfield Beach, Fla., formerly of Freehold Township, N.J., passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 25, 2017. Jim was born and raised in New York City and lived in Manhattan, Bronx, and eventually Staten Island.

He enlisted in the New York Guard before he was of age and upon discovery was honorably discharged. He then entered the Air Force, spending two years in Paris. Jim became a decorated New York City fireman and was proud to spend much of his career with the brave and talented men of Ladder 77 and Engine 151 in Staten Island. In retirement he loved to garden, play cards, watch sports, walk the beach and tell his stories.

Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife, Beatrice, and parents, Margaret (McAlevy) and James. He is survived by his children, James, Margaret (Mehryar Shafai), Kevin (Katherine), Kerry (Teresa), 10 much loved grandchildren, two great-grandchildren (with one on the way), and many loving nieces and nephews. A special thank you to Mary Ann and Peter for opening up their home and caring for Jim during the past year.

Visitation is Monday from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at Kraeer Funeral Home, 217 East Hillsboro Blvd., Deerfield Beach.
