Lakewood - James Battlehill Manuel, 99, of Lakewood passed away at home on January 29. J.B. was born in 1918 in Brosville, VA to Nannie Belle and James H. Manuel and grew up in Eden, NC. He joined the Navy in 1939 and served aboard the Battleship USS New York before and during WW-II. James transferred to the Navy airship program, serving in various blimp squadrons at Lakehurst Naval Air Station as well as serving active duty during the Berlin and Cuban Crisis. He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1967 as a Senior Chief. James also worked as a civilian in the Engineering Dept. at Lakehurst and retired with 44 years of service. He served for many years as a Director on the Lakehurst Naval Credit Union board and a Director and member of Lakewood American Legion Post 166. J.B. was never one to sit still and stayed busy his entire life working in his yard and tending to his lush garden. His hobbies included boating, bowling and golf. With his wife, Faye, he spent many years traveling in their RV and spending winters in Florida. James was devoted to family and friends and never hesitated to help with a project, having the knack to fix nearly anything. He is survived by his beloved wife of 74 years, Faye Hawks Manuel, son, James and wife Teresa, and a cherished grand-daughter, Bonnie Manuel. Having outlived his nine siblings, he is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
