Dr. James M. Caulfield Obituary
Dr. James M. Caulfield

AGE: 90 • New Providence

Dr. James M. Caulfield, 90, of New Providence, formerly of Union Township and Spring Lake, passed away at Jersey Shore University Medical Center on June 1, 2017 after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family. A graduate of St. Peter's Prep '46 and St. Peter's College '50 in Jersey City, Dr. Caulfield believed in the Jesuit motto, "A man for others," and took pride in being Irish, Catholic, a Democrat, and Jesuit-educated. He dedicated 43 years to the children of the Union Township Public Schools, 18 as superintendent, and was particularly proud of Union being recognized as one of the best school systems in the nation by President George H.W. Bush who visited the district in 1989.

Dr. Caulfield partnered with the Union YMCA to establish infant and geriatric care centers. He established both preschool and full day kindergarten in the early 1980's years before it became popular, followed by after care for working parents. Dr. Caulfield's goal of providing equal educational opportunities for all students led to the creation of a supermarket in Union High School staffed by students with learning disabilities. Dr. Caulfield also established a branch of a local bank at the high school to train students for careers in finance and a full scale television studio to introduce careers in broadcasting and communications. He formed the first Army Junior ROTC Program in the State. Dr. Caulfield partnered with Seton Hall University to offer courses to seniors so they could enter college as sophomores. He was asked to testify on several occasions before the U.S. House and Senate Committees on Education.

Dr. Caulfield was associated with Seton Hall University for over 60 years, serving 40 years as an adjunct instructor and 20 years as Director of the Executive Ed.D. Program which he founded and designed for practicing school executives, 500 of whom now serve in 30 states and several foreign countries. Dr. Caulfield also wrote two books on school administration and had published a third, "The Caulfield Years," a history of his career as a school superintendent and university instructor, this past April. He served as the educational consultant to The Robert Treat Academy in Newark, the first charter school in New Jersey, since its opening in September of 1997.

Dr. Caulfield served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and in the Army Reserve, and was honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1956. He earned his doctorate from Rutgers University in 1964. In addition to Seton Hall, he taught at Lehigh University and St. Peter's College.

Dr. Caulfield was pre-deceased in July of 2016 by his beloved wife and best friend, the former Regina Nevin, to whom he was married for 63 years, his parents, sister Cecilia, and brother Patrick. He and his wife had four children, Dr. Maryrose Caulfield, James Caulfield, Jr. (Donna), the Honorable Regina Caulfield (Douglas Lanthier), Colleen Caulfield, and nine grandchildren, Erin (Jeremy Gorin), Brendan, Bridget, Meaghan, Christopher, Laura, Sean (Kelly), Tara, and Tess, and many nieces and nephews. He was expecting his first great-grandchild this August. He also leaves behind his devoted Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Paddy O'Malley.

We wish to extend our sincere appreciation to Dr. John Schmidt, Michael Caulfield, and Robert Paul, and to his friends at Lantern Hill especially David Kishbauch, Diane O'Brien and Thomas Foley. We thank this special group of individuals who touched the life of Dr. Caulfield in a profound way. Family and friends are invited to visit between 1 and 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 11, 2017 at the McCracken Funeral Home, 1500 Morris Avenue, Union. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Church, 971 Suburban Road, Union at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 12, 2017 followed by entombment at St. Catharine's Cemetery in Sea Girt. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Dr. Caulfield's name to Boystown (www.boystown.org) or Canine Partners for Life (www.k94life.org/give).
