AGE: 73 • Spring Lake Heights

James Matthew "Jim" Howard of Spring Lake Heights, NJ, passed away January 31st, 2017. The proud American son of Irish immigrants, he was born and raised in the Vailsburg section of Newark, NJ, and attended Sacred Heart Grammar School, Our Lady of the Valley High School and Seton Hall University. He also served in the New Jersey National Guard. A passionate photographer, Jim covered freelance assignments for the Newark Evening News in the 1960's before beginning a lifelong career with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation Services for the New Jersey Department of Labor, retiring in 2005 after 38 years of service. In 1972, he moved to Manasquan, NJ, where he raised his three sons. He relocated in 1997 to Spring Lake Heights, where he spent his remaining years. All the while, he worked part-time as a wedding and event photographer, as well as bar tending at many shore establishments including the Spring Lake Golf Club, the King's Grant Inn, and Harrigan's Pub.

In his later years, he worked as a news photographer for the Coast Star News group, and volunteered many hours of photo and news writing services to the Manasquan Elks Lodge #2534, service for which he was recognized as Elk of the Year 2006-2007. His passion and talent for photography has been taken up by all three of his sons. He is predeceased by his parents, James Patrick Howard, originally from Nurney Demense, County Kildare, and Delia Keane Howard. Clooncan, County Roscommon, Ireland—longtime co-owners of the legendary McGovern's Tavern in Newark, NJ, where he first tended bar. Jim is survived survived by two sisters, Ann Cassidy of The Woodlands, Texas, and Mary Delaney of Nokomis, Florida, and his three sons, James Michael and Patrick Thomas, both of Clifden, Ireland, and John Matthew "Jack," his wife Corey, and their daughter, Avery Rose, of Somerville, NJ. Avery loved her Papa Jim very, very much. After cremation, a private service will be held for family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made in Jim's name to Elks Camp Moore c/o New Jersey State Elks Handicapped Children's Committee 665 Rahway Ave PO Box 1596 Woodbridge, NJ 07095.
