James R. Garrity Sr. Obituary
James R. Garrity, Sr.

AGE: 75 • Stuart, FL formerly Ocean Township

James R. Garrity, Sr., 75, passed away with his family by his side on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at his residence in Stuart, FL.

Born in Asbury Park, NJ, Mr. Garrity spent most of his life in Ocean Township, NJ where he and his sister Nancy were raised by their parents Doris and James Garrity. Jim was a graduate of Asbury Park high school where he played Varsity basketball and baseball. He graduated from Monmouth College in 1964 and married Sandy Spino the same year. The couple remained in Ocean Township for 40 years where they raised a family and were very active in the community before retiring to Hobe Sound, FL in 2003.

Prior to moving to FL to enjoy family Jim was the owner of Garrity's Exxon in Wanamassa, NJ. Family, friends and customers who stopped into the station could always count on Jim for a helping hand as well as a few funny jokes. Jim also served the Ocean Township he loved in many ways, coaching sports, volunteering at the Wanamassa Fire Dept. and holding several township elected offices including 25 years as a Councilman and Mayor.

Jimmy, as friends called him, was an incredibly devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend who touched and blessed so many lives. An avid outdoorsman he loved hunting, fishing, boating and golf. He was usually found with a fishing rod in one hand and a cold beer in the other somewhere on a boat or the beach with his loved ones.

Mr. Garrity is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sandra Garrity of Stuart, FL; His sister Nancy Lillie of Wanamassa, NJ, son, James R. Garrity Jr. of Palm City, FL, and son, Douglas Garrity and his wife Jenna of Stuart, FL; grandchildren, Brittany, James, Jared, Madelyn, and Madison.

Services will be held on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 2:00PM at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Hobe Sound, FL.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Jim's name to Vanderbilt - Ingram Cancer Center and University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center
