James R. Icklan

Manchester - James R. Icklan, 73, of Manchester died unexpectedly Friday, December 29th at Community Medical Center in Toms River. He was a lifelong educator, teaching at Hackensack High School, Brick High School, Ocean County College, Kean College and The College of New Jersey. He also served as a second vice-president at Continental Bank and Trust. As his career progressed he became an attorney and worked for the firm of James J. Curry in Toms River. He was ultimately a partner in his own firm of Tomasik and Icklan, also in Toms River.

Born in Jersey City, Jim grew up in Lyndhurst and then made his home in Brick, NJ. From there he moved to Toms River where he lived for many years and then more recently relocated to Manchester. Jim received his bachelor's degree from Montclair State University, Master's degree from the Seton Hall University of Business, and his Juris Doctor degree from the Seton Hall University School of Law.

Jim was an active parishioner of St. Joseph's Church in Toms River. He was also a very dedicated fan of the Seton Hall men's basketball team and member of the Seton Hall Booster Club. Many friends and family members share fond memories of attending basketball games with Jim.

Jim was predeceased by his parents Ruth and Thomas Icklan, and his wife Judith. Surviving are his brothers Thomas and wife Elaine of Manchester, William and wife Joan of Wellfleet, MA, John and wife Sherrill of Wake Forest, NC, loving daughters Shannon Staiger and husband Jeff of Barnegat, Denise McEvilly and husband Michael of Rumson, devoted son Daniel of Bend, OR, and loving step-daughter Colleen Teifer of Sunset Beach, NC. Jim also cherished his six grandchildren Abigail, Anna and Audrey Staiger and Peter, Gavin and Mason McEvilly. He also enjoyed spending time with his companion, Diane Fichter of Oceanport.

Visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Friday, January 5th at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home at 703 Main St. in Toms River. The funeral mass will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church at 685 Hooper Avenue also in Toms River. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Toms River.
