Joan Labun Obituary
Joan Labun

Whiting

Joan Labun, an avid birder and an accomplished painter and photographer, passed away May 31, 2017, at AristaCare at Whiting after a long struggle with cancer.

Born in New Brunswick, she lived in the city for many years before moving to Whiting seven years ago. She was known for creating beautiful gardens at her residences in both towns.

A graduate of New Brunswick High School, she majored in art at the University of Tennessee, where she earned a Bachelor's degree. She also earned a certificate in horticultural therapy at Rutgers University. She had been employed as a computer programmer at Rutgers and Johnson & Johnson.

Joan loved the outdoors and, in recent months, whenever her health permitted, could be found on birding jaunts or working in her garden. She was a longtime member of the New Jersey Audubon Society and traveled on birding trips in the United States and abroad. Her interests extended to butterflies, dragonflies, and botany. She was a lover of opera.

Joan is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Liz Labun, of Spotswood; her sister, Dorothy Labun, of North Brunswick; two nieces, Cathy and Christine, and a nephew, Steven.
