She attended Snyder High School where she met her future husband Jim Leather. She became a Registered Nurse after attending St. Michaels School of Nursing and SHU. In June 1952 she married Jim Leather prior to his deployment to Korea.

Upon his return from Korea, Jim continued his service in the U.S. Marine Corps. The couple lived on several Marine Corps bases in Quantico, Va., Beaufort, S.C., and Alexandria, Va. until his retirement from the USMC In 1966. In 1999 the couple moved to Lions Head South in Brick, NJ. She continued to be active in her community serving on several committees and as a member and later president of the Board of Trustees.

Joan and Jim travelled extensively, visiting all 50 states and many foreign countries, but most of all they enjoyed the presence of their large family. They hosted a Leather family reunion in Avon every summer for over 50 years. Frequent visits by their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the primary joy of their life.
