AGE: 92 • Manahawkin, formerly of Newark

John Alexander Valickas, 92, died at home on Tuesday, January 10, 2017. Visitation will be on Sunday, January 15th from 2 to 6 p.m. A Mass will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 17th, at St. Joseph's Church, West Orange, New Jersey, following the funeral from the Quinn Hopping Funeral Home, 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Avenue, Livingston. Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.

A lifelong resident of Newark, John moved to Manahawkin after his retirement. He proudly served in the US Marines in WWII, and with the Newark Police Department for 31 years, retiring as a Detective Lieutenant in 1979. Following his career with the Newark Police, he continued working at Harrah's, Atlantic City, in the Security Department. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and Police Benevolent Association of Newark, and the VFW.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Alice in 1993 and is survived by his loving children, daughter Joyce Ellen of West Orange, son John Alexander and wife Joyce Mary also of West Orange, and son Chris and wife Stacy of Dover, Delaware; three grandchildren, Christopher Michael Valickas and wife Susan Little Valickas of Carmel, NY, Lori Anne McQuiddy and husband Cory of Concord, California, and Kari Leigh Valickas of Union, also 3 great grandchildren, Maddax Nicole, Lavinia Jane, and Cedar Scott. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Family members fondly recall him often holding court and telling countless stories. He was an avid Yankees and Giants fan, and indeed one of the last of the "Greatest Generation".

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Deborah Heart and Lung Center, 200 Trenton Road, Browns Mills, N.J., 08015.
