John Claude Miller, 91, of Barnegat went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 5th. He was born in Hazleton, PA on February 27, 1925; the only child of John X. and Margaret Frisch Miller. When he was 7 the family moved to Philadelphia, where he resided until 2001. In 1942, at age 17, John joined the Navy and served on a destroyer that was engaged in many of the major battles in the South Pacific. He witnessed the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. He was a proud "Tin Can" Sailor. After his discharge in 1946, John became a union plumber, his profession for 35 years.

He married Marie Wikoff in 1948, and enjoyed 51 years of marriage with her, until her death in 1999. They had three sons: Jack (Sandy), Walter (Diane), and Terry (Terry). In 2001, he moved to Manahawkin and began attending Ocean Community Church, where he met his wife, Lee. They moved into a new house in Barnegat in 2003.

John loved his church, his family, fishing, investing in the stock market, old time country music, the Phillies and the Eagles. He was a member of the South Bay Seniors, and a volunteer for 15 years at Southern Ocean Medical Center.

He is survived, in addition to his wife and his three sons and their wives, by five grandchildren: Jeremy Miller (Colleen), Keith Miller (Dana), Brian Miller (Michele), Kristie Cyphert (Matt), and Kevin Miller; as well as 10 great grandchildren. He is also survived by Lee's children, Tracy Dods (Doug), Michael Parker (Karen), Christina Gile (Mark), Angel Greene (Randy) and Daniel Kwapinski (Patty) and he was Pop-Pop John to her 11 grandchildren.

Memorial Gathering Saturday, Jan. 28 from 10 to 11 AM with a Memorial Service to follow at 11 AM at Ocean Community Church, 1492 Rte. 72 W., Manahawkin, NJ 08050. Donations to the Ocean Community Church General Fund in John's memory appreciated. Barnegat Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. (
