John E. Slater Obituary
John E. Slater

AGE: 94 •

John E. Slater, Jr, 94, passed away June 11, 2017 at the Continuing Care Facility at Seabrook Village, Tinton Falls, NJ. He was born on February 18, 1923 in Spring Valley, New York and grew up in Bloomfield, New Jersey where he attended Bloomfield High School. John was a graduate of Bloomfield College and Princeton Theological Seminary and an ordained Presbyterian Minister. He held pastorates in Greenwich, Bloomfield and finally Asbury Park, New Jersey where he served for sixteen years. In 1983, Mr. Slater was asked to manage Asbury Towers, the then new twenty-six story high-rise for seniors located on Asbury Park oceanfront, which he did for fourteen years until his retirement.

While at Princeton Seminary John met Marion Avakian, married her in 1947, and had sixty-four wonderful years together before her death in 2003. They enjoyed traveling in Europe, car trips around the United States, visits to Lake George and music at the Tabernacle in Ocean Grove. John loved to ride his bicycle all around Monmouth County, paddle his canoe on the little rivers of South Jersey, take bike trips with Grandson Jamie, rollerblade wherever he could, watch his grandchildren play sports, but reading and singing brought him enjoyment until his last days. He loved to serenade anyone who would listen, including the wonderful staff at "Continuing Care at Seabrook Village".

He leaves two children, Judith Lewis and husband Donald of Addison, Vermont and John S. Slater, of Guilford, Connecticut and a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Slater of Madison Connecticut: four grandchildren, Kathryn Lewis and Jason Frye, Donald Lewis and wife Leah, Matthew Lewis and wife Carrie, and Kristen Slater, as well as six great grandchildren, his brother Stuart Slater and his wife Edna of Illinois and his sisters in law Ruth Avakian of Tinton Falls and Helen Eberle of Westwood, NJ.

A memorial service will be held, Thursday, June 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in The Atrium at Seabrook Village at Tinton Falls. Burial will be at Old Tennent Church Cemetery, Freehold. Donations may be made to the Scholarship Endowment Fund at Princeton Theological Seminary; Presbyterian Church on the Hill, Ocean, New Jersey; The Benevolent Fund of Seabrook Village; or the National Parks Foundation. Condolences may be offered online at www.elyfuneralhome.com.
