John Scarfo Obituary
John Scarfo

AGE: 97 • Bradley Beach

John Scarfo, 97, of Bradley Beach, NJ passed away peacefully on May 30, 2017 with his family close by. John, originally from Brooklyn, NY was an Army Veteran who served during WWII from 1942-1946. John Scarfo was inducted into the US Army on April 1, 1942 in Brooklyn, NY, just four months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. As was true of most of the able-bodied young men of his generation, John was eager to serve and defend his country. He worked at the 42nd General Army Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. He spent nearly two years in Australia caring for wounded G.I.S that had done battle in the Pacific waters and islands. From Australia, John traveled to a hospital unit in Manila, Philippines in 1944. While at the Manila hospital, in addition to his regular care duties of his fellow servicemen, he began a program of taking soldiers confined to bed, outside to enjoy the sunshine and warm climate. This required building ramps to roll the beds outside to the lawn areas. It was a big hit with everyone! He has always been thankful for his opportunity to serve his country. John was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, a true Brooklyn boy through and through. There he met and married his wife Louise. John and Louise lived and raised their three children in Bradley Beach, NJ for the majority of his life. In his later years they moved to Brick, NJ with his daughter, son-in-law, and two grandkids. John was a family man and enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids. John was a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council #816, Neptune City, Holy Name Society of Ascension Church, and Fireman for Bradley Beach. He was predeceased by his loving parents Joseph and Rose Scarfo, son, John "J" Scarfo in 1989. Surviving is his beloved wife of 65 years, Louise, his daughter Lisa and her husband , Paul of Brick, his son Robert Scarfo and his wife, Jayme of Humble, TX, and his daughter-in-law Denise McLaughlin and her husband, Brien of Morris Plains, his grandchildren: Nicole Healy, and her husband Shawn, John Scarfo, Alex Scarfo, and his wife Emily, Alyse DeSimone, and her boyfriend, Edward, and Paul DeSimone; and two great grandchildren; Julian Healy and Olivia Healy; many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Thurs. June 1, 2017 from 4pm -8pm at Francioni, Taylor & Lopez Funeral Home, 1200 10th Ave., Neptune. A 10am mass will be held Friday, June 2, 2017 at Church of the Ascension, Bradley Beach, Entombment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Sea Girt, NJ. In lieu of flowers, please make donation in his name to Juvenile Diabetes, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10004.
