John W. Morrissey Jr.

John W. Morrissey Jr., 94, peacefully passed away January 5, 2017 at his home in St. Petersburg, FL under the care of hospice and his family.

John was born August 1, 1922 to John and Elizabeth (Lynch) Morrissey in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He lived a rich and beautiful life filled with the love of his family of four generations and a steadfast Catholic faith.

John was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Elizabeth, NJ and served in the US Navy in WWII on the USS Nashville and was a decorated veteran. He married his beautiful bride, Jean B. Melillo, in 1945. In March of 2016 they celebrated 71 years of marriage; eight children, thirteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Settling originally in Elizabeth, New Jersey John worked at ESSO and began a family with Jean. In 1966 the family moved full time to the shore town of Ocean Gate, New Jersey. He served as union president and retired from Toms River Chemical in 1984. He and Jean lived in Las Vegas, Nevada for many years before moving to Florida. John loved to spend time with his family and friends; he was a devoted family man. He was quick to laugh, smile and have a joke to share. He was strong, kind and generous. He was an avid swimmer, had a good singing voice and a great rapport with children. He was actively involved in the VFW post 9503, St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Bayville, NJ and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Elizabeth, NJ.

John is survived by his wife, Jean Morrissey of St. Petersburg, FL; daughter and son-in-law: Elaine and Robert Walsh of Tierra Verde, FL; son: Tom Morrissey of Pasadena, FL; son: Ken Morrissey of Toms River, NJ; son and daughter-in-law: Steven and Connie Morrissey of Reno, NV; daughter-in-law: Linda Schiele Morrissey of Colorado; and daughter and son-in-law: Gina and Marty Wells of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren: Rob Walsh and Becky Weber; Ali, Nathan and Mariah Morrissey; Cole, Madison, Zeke and Hazel Morrissey; Amanda Morrissey, Danielle Cicalese and Christopher Fehn; and Michael W. Morrissey; great grandchildren; Nick and Zack Walsh, and Luke, Ava and Liam Weber; his sister and brother-in-law: Gerri and Jim O'Brien of Brick, NJ; and numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his sons: Jack, Bill, and Michael A. Morrissey; his great granddaughters: Elizabeth and Olivia Weber; his sister Mary (Morrissey) McGrath, his brother Richard Morrissey, his father-in-law Thomas Melillo and his parents.

A Celebration of Life service will be announced and held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Pediatric Cancer Center and Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.
